This
is John Hooten's forth year as head coach of the Barracudas. He came to
swimming as a coach to help his children in their last years of youth
swimming. In his first two years of coaching swimmers his age groups won
33 SSL league championships and broke 20 SSL league records. Coach
Hooten's earlier coaching background was as a rowing coach at
Philadelphia's Vesper Boat Club where he produced 18 Olympians and 32
National team members. His Vesper athletes won 15 Olympic and World
Championship medals including Anita DeFrantz, 1976 Olympic medalist,
current International Olympic Committee member and senior U.S.
representative to the IOC . His teams at Vesper won 25 National
Championship titles. From 1975 to 1980 he was Olympic and National Team
Coach winning several international events. Coach Hooten also spent one
year as head coach of LaSalle High School where they were Philadelphia
City Champions, and one year as Head Coach of Temple University where
they were Dad Vail Champions. After 1980 he retired from coaching to
have more time for his family while his wife was in medical school and
residency. He had always intended to go back to coach rowing when his
children were grown, but found coaching swimming at the grass roots to
more interesting and fun and it involved far less travel.
Coach Hooten has produced champions in several other sports including
basketball, soccer and unicycle riding. In 1995 he started and has
coached the Troopizi Unicycle Club. Over the years he has taught
hundreds of people (kids and adults) to ride unicycles. Club riders have
won 11 National Championship titles and medals in each of the last 3
World Unicycle Championships including Zack Baldwin, 2004 World Champion
in Tokyo, Japan .
For the last 10 years John Hooten has been the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout
Troop 121. During that time over 110 boys from his troop have been
advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout.

Mindy Patterson has been swimming most of her life: from a young age to
college level, to currently a Master's level. At the age of 6, Mindy
began swimming year-round for the Citrus Heights Piranhas. She then
transferred to Fair Oaks Sea Broncos which later merged into what is now
known as CCA. When she was in the 9-10 year age group, she swam in
Stockholm, Sweden for a couple of years. Her specialties in college were
the freestyle sprints and backstroke. Mindy has been coaching at the
Master's level for 7 years and has been coaching for the Barracudas
since 2004. She has two children on the swim team, works for a civil
engineering firm in Sacramento, and is in the process of getting her
Master's in Accounting.
